Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
