Individuals who endured abuse by Catholic clergy have voiced fresh optimism following their initial encounter with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, who leads the anti-abuse organization, commented that the Pope's choice to engage with them so early in his papacy spoke volumes about his commitment to tackling the problem.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Policy Advocated

The group is advocating for a global strict approach that would defrock any priest who confesses to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a child. This approach has been implemented in the United States.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "opposition in certain regions of the globe" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is resistance," Hickey stated.

Legacy Challenge

The new Pope, who took the position in May, has inherited this longstanding issue that has plagued the Church for decades.

Previous efforts to resolve the situation included an historic summit on paedophilia within the Church and revisions to church laws to explicitly criminalize sexual abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For the representative, who prefers they/them pronouns, the drive for global implementation of the policy is deeply meaningful. The North American advocate revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was later moved between different parishes.

"We trust this will set the tone for his papacy, because we want to work with him," Hickey expressed. "Both sides share the common objective, we want to end clergy abuse."

Significant Meeting

Seven representatives of the coalition, which represents survivors and advocates from over thirty nations, engaged with the Pontiff in his Vatican office.

The meeting, originally scheduled for 20 minutes, extended to a sixty minutes, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was characterized as "very understanding" when listening to the story of a woman abused at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

They added the Pope was "compassionate" about their own experience and appeared "very humble, funny, and very down to earth."

"Victims have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," they stated. "I felt like he was sincere, practical, and receptive and eager to collaborate with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The group is advocating that revisions to canon law will enable the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have spoken with specialists and gathered documents that they will submit to Pope Leo.

"He appeared engaged in reviewing it," they noted.

Accountability Emphasized

A recent Vatican-commissioned report emphasized the "importance of a efficient process for the resignation and/or dismissal of Church leaders or staff in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The document also noted that survivors consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for church leaders and major superiors to be held accountable for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey shared they informed the pontiff at the start of their meeting: "This is as much a risk for him to participate in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the encounter, they expressed optimism for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, coming together and building a connection and continuing to build that relationship is a move in the correct path," they stated.

Hickey concluded that they shared with Pope Leo: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I feel like we can alter how the story ends - he appreciated that."
