Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to contest certain rulings from the official, following the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
